Enrollment & Fees

When are enrollment applications due for the fall and spring semesters?

 Although Heritage has open admission throughout the year, to start school at the beginning of the fall semester, we recommend your application be submitted by July 31.  To start school in the spring semester, we recommend your application be submitted by November 30.

Is there an enrollment application fee, and if so, is it refundable?

 There is a non-refundable $30 application fee.  Separate enrollment applications are required for each child. There is a cap of $100 dollar per family.

How many days does it take to process an enrollment application?

 Approximately one week (five business days)
 

How much does tuition cost?

Tuition rates vary depending on whether your child is in full- or half-day Kindergarten, elementary, junior high or high school.  Review the current rates.

Does Heritage charge a family enrollment fee?

 Yes, the non-refundable annual fee varies based on the grade, the number of children you enroll, and when the fee is paid.  For Pre-K, the fee is $250 per year.  For Kindergarten through 12th grade, the fee is $500 for the first child and $300 for second child.  The maximum enrollment fee per family is $800.  For more information, see the Tuition & Financial Policy form.

Is financial aid available?

 Yes, we award more than $200,000 in tuition assistance each year.  The information necessary to apply for financial aid is available on our Tuition & Financial Policy form.

Does Heritage have an entrance exam?

 Yes, formal assessment is required for all students entering kindergarten through 8th grade are required to take a formal intake test, and may be required for high school applicants as well. Testing assesses mathematical thinking, reading fluency and comprehension, spelling proficiency, and general composition skills.  Assessment is one of the ways we become better acquainted with your child and learn how best to provide a nurturing environment for his or her academic experiences.

Prospective students entering 7th through 12th grades may be required to complete an entrance exam if there are concerns about academic proficiency based on report cards and transcripts, written component of the enrollment application, or interviews questions.

 

 

 

Faith

Do I need to be a Christian for my child to attend Heritage?

 Heritage Christian Academy partners with parents in the education and spiritual discipleship of their children.  To make that endeavor successful, we believe it works best when both parents are Christians.  Notable exceptions to this include divorce and single-parent families.  Our desire is simply to foster the best environment for the instruction of God’s children at school and at home.  Although we hope each child makes a profession of faith, it is not a prerequisite.

Is Heritage affiliated with a church?

 No, we were founded as a non-denominational Christian school more than 40 years ago.  Current Heritage families, however, represent over 30 local churches.

 

 

 

Credentials

Is the school accredited, and if so, by whom?

 For the past fifteen years, Heritage has been accredited by the Association of Christian Schools International (ACSI), which maintains rigorous academic standards for nearly 24,000 schools in more than 100 countries.  In 2015, HCA renewed its certification by submitting to the process of an ACSI observation team and was awarded their highest accreditation possible, five-year certification.

What are the qualifications of teachers? Are they certified?

 All teachers are required to have a bachelor’s degree and maintain ACSI teacher certification.  Our faculty and staff have collectively earned 51 degrees from more than 40 colleges and universities.  Turnover is low; we average about one new teacher per year.  Each one is devoted to serving as “living curriculum” influencing students on a daily basis.

Are background checks performed on faculty and staff?

 We use SafeHiring Solutions to conduct background checks on all staff, faculty, and coaches prior to employment.  Background checks are also conducted on all volunteers who participate in classroom activities.

Which colleges and universities do Heritage graduates attend?

 During the past 40 years, more than 90% of Our graduating senior have gone on to attend a variety of four-year colleges or universities, including Boston University, Colorado School of Mines, Colorado State University, Cornell, Dordt, Johns Hopkins, Princeton, University of Northern Colorado, and University of Colorado at Boulder.  Our graduates have been accepted to numerous Christian colleges and universities including Colorado Christian College, Biola University, George Fox University, John Brown University, Oklahoma Baptist University, Pepperdine University, and Wheaton College.

Can high school students take AP courses?

How are students tested during the school year to ensure competency?

Teachers routinely assess students through various traditional and personalized assessment strategies.  We use these assessments to guide instruction, facilitate content mastery, and measure and document growth.

Every other academic year, students in 1st through 11th grades are administered the standardized Terra Nova tests (now in its 3rd edition), which is recommended by our accrediting organization, the Association of Christian Schools International.  The tests provide a measure of current academic achievement by assessing student competencies in reading, language arts, mathematics, science, and social studies.  Tests results are combined with teacher evaluations of each student’s progress to determine more individualizes instruction.  The Terra Nova tests also assess school performance by measuring curriculum alignment with outcomes, which informs our school-wide plan of areas for improvement as students matriculate.

What team sports are available?

 For junior high students, we offer basketball, soccer and girls volleyball.  For high school students we offer soccer, basketball, cross-country, track, and girls volleyball.

What art and music programs are offered?

 Art is offered in all grades from Pre-K through 12th.  Students in grades 5th through 12th can participate in band, and drama is available to students in grades 7th through 12th, with some productions including elementary students.

 

 

 

Operation

What is the average number of students per classroom?

 Class size varies from year to year and by grade.  Typically size is 18 to 22 students, and is usually distributed by grade as follows: preschool (15 students), kindergarten (18 students), and 1st through 12th grade (24 students).

Does Heritage have guidelines for student conduct and academic honesty?

 Yes, we have an elementary handbook for grades 1st through 5th, and a secondary handbook for grades 6th through 12th.  Handbooks can be found on the Student Handbook page. There is no handbook for Pre-K.

Is child care offered before or after school?

 Yes.  Heritage offers before and after care for families that need earlier drop-off times or later pick-up times for their K-8th grade students.  Before care is available Monday through Friday beginning at 7:00 a.m., and after care is available 3:15 to 6:00 p.m.  It’s available five days a week when school is in session.  Please see Before & After Care for more information.

Does Heritage offer daily bus service?

 Yes, we provide bus service to families in south Fort Collins and Loveland.  For more information, see Bus Service Information.
 

How secure is the building?

 Unlike many Christian schools that share common areas with churches and other organizations, Heritage is blessed to be in its own building – one that doesn’t look like a school and is somewhat secluded.  The building has three exterior doors that are most frequently used, and when unlocked, are constantly monitored by staff.  The main door is the primary entrance to the building, and a staffed receptionist’s desk is located between that door and the hallways to the school.  A second door, located along the front of the building, is unlocked for about a half hour while students arrive in the morning and depart in the afternoon, and during those times is monitored by our elementary school principal and teachers.  And finally, a back door to our playground is unlocked during recess, which, is like the playground, is monitored by several assigned teachers.

Are faculty, staff, and students taught how to respond in case of emergencies?

 Teachers discuss different emergency situations with their classes and perform fire drills and lock-down drills during the year.  An emergency manual is on every teacher’s desk as well.  The Poudre Valley Fire Department has evaluated our drills and we have had the Larimer County Sheriff’s office critique our emergency manual.  The Larimer County S.W.A.T. Team has also run drills at Heritage when school was not in session and knows the configuration of the halls and classrooms.

Can parents visit the school or their child’s classrooms while school is in session?

 Yes, in fact, you would be hard pressed to walk in to Heritage any time during a school day and not see parents volunteering.  Parents are welcome to observe and be involved in the classroom in a multitude of ways.  Parent volunteers read with the students, attend field trips, assist with study groups, organize special activities and pray for the school daily.

How many years has Heritage been in operation?

 Heritage was founded in 1970 by three pastors with First Baptist (now LifePointe Church) serving as our first home.  The purpose in founding the school was to develop a school which could offer a Christian education to students in K – 8. School began in 1970 with 56 students, four teachers and one administrator under the name Heritage Christian School. Two years later the board decided to expand the grades to preschool – 12th.  Our first graduating class was in 1973.

As we began to outgrow our facilities, grades 9 – 12 moved to Evangelical Covenant Church, but our desire had always been to have our own facility.  In 2006 we moved to building on Wheaton Drive and then on to a much larger space at our current location which gave us room to have athletic facilities.  At that time, we also created a new non-profit foundation and updated the school’s name to Heritage Christian Academy.

Does the school have a board of directors and a foundation?

 Yes, Heritage is incorporated in the State of Colorado as a non-profit organization under the direction of a nine-member board of directors.  Our foundation, named the Heritage Christian Foundation (HCF), is a charitable, public, non-profit foundation that provides a building for the school and other financial support as necessary.  A few of the seven HCF members also serve on the board of directors to foster communication and effective teamwork between the two groups.
